Why is why important | コーチブログ | ベリタス(VERITAS)

“Why” is such a powerful word. We use it every day and even children when they are very little start exploring the world by asking this question. It let us know how important this word is. At Veritas we use the word why very often.

We ask why many times during our discussion and facilitation. When we ask why we can prompt the students to share their reasons with us. Reasons are very important because they highlight the motivations behind your message, thus making it more convincing.

We also ask why many times because we want our students to defend their message and the best way is to give reasons. If I say “I like McDonald’s”, and then I’m asked why I like it, I can defend my conclusion and also really understand why I like McDonald’s so much.

Asking why is also a great question during facilitation because you can go deeper in the discussion by asking a very simple question. If you don’t know what to ask during facilitation, this is another great advantage of this question, and you can easily go forward in the discussion, and know more about the participants’ opinions just with a single word.

When the students start writing the script for their self-introduction presentation, we say to them to ask themselves why three times. This way they can find “who they really are” thanks to the self-analysis process, which make us more engaging to others. They have to ask themself why they have a certain hobby or they chose their job, why they like something. This way we can really express who we are and self-analyze ourselves. We can really go deeper and inspire others with our whys.

Regarding inspiring others, I would like to quote a very famous TED speech by Simon Sinek: “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it” . The core of what makes people follow someone is in the why. He created the golden circle, which starts externally with the what, then the how, and in the center we have the why. Even our brain has developed to focus on the why instead of what and how, as Sinek explains in his speech. That’s how important why is in our life.

So in conclusion, why is essential to our life and makes our message even more engaging and inspiring.
